"Provide users with a set of records that match people on their tree
automatically and allow them to move the information on to a person profile"
Original designs
When I arrived at Findmypast I inherited previous designs from a designer. I was then
asked to take these designs and make them
work for users.
Flow sketching
Findmypast's Hint feature allows users to build their trees more efficiently by providing them with a set of records that the search algorythms think match people on their family tree.
This project had a lot of moving parts and affected many screens across the Findmypast site. I drew out a big map of the site to show how the user flow could work and which pages we needed to work on.
User testing
Once I had created the first set of design flows I tested them with users.
User profiling
Final design
This feature was intended to be aimed at a new user base, people who were new to genealogy software but had a keen interest in getting started on building their family their tree.
This is an image of how the user is notified that they have hints on the family tree.
Hints for individual people
When a user clicks on the orange number notification from the tree they are taken to this page to view the different hints we have found for them in the system.
Reviewing & adding facts
The key to the hints feature is that it keeps the user intrigued and helps them make discoveries about their past that they may not have otherwise found by just searching for records manually.
This feature also allows the user to move the information and facts from the record into their tree. This would allow users to build a rich catalogue of information about their family very quickly and easily.
